What it means, and what it doesn't

Jev's anime taste roughly follows the fans, and splits where fans' devotion runs deepest: later seasons of long-running series and a few cult favorites. Its extra warmth for 80s and 90s action films looks like an outsider's taste, the anime a general viewer has heard of.

It doesn't mean Jev has watched them. And the sequels at the bottom are the clearest case of fans rating what they already love.

Caveats

  • Fans rate what they chose to watch. MyAnimeList users rate shows they chose, and later seasons of a series are rated almost only by people who loved the earlier ones. That's likely why sixth seasons score so well with their audience.
  • Ratings squeezed into five levels. MyAnimeList ratings run 1 to 10; they were binned onto the project's five described levels. The comparison uses ranks, not levels.
  • A 2016 catalog. The ratings come from a 2016 dataset of titles with at least 300 ratings, so recent anime isn't here.

Why ask this

Anime fans rate a lot and argue about it more. Comparing Jev with MyAnimeList, the biggest fan database, shows whether a model's sense of good anime matches the people who watch it, and where it doesn't.

Someone asking "what should I watch after Cowboy Bebop?" gets the model's taste, not the fandom's. Knowing where the two part ways shows which recommendations to trust.

How this was done

The people and the data

MyAnimeList users, via a public 2016 dataset of their 1-to-10 ratings. For each title, the experiment uses the distribution of its ratings, set on the same five levels Jev answers on. The 1,359 titles are TV series and films with at least 300 ratings each, from old films like Vampire Hunter D to long-running series like Major, whose seasons each appear as their own title.

What Jev was asked

Every title one at a time:

How much would you enjoy watching Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu (TV series)?

You'd give up on it early · You'd finish it but forget it within a week · You'd enjoy it once and not rewatch it · You'd recommend it to a friend · You'd rewatch it and count it among your favorites

Each was also asked with the answers reversed, and the two averaged. Jev never saw the MyAnimeList ratings.

How it was measured

The analysis ranks all 1,359 titles by Jev's average level and by the users', and compares the orders with a rank correlation (1 means the same order, 0 means none). Ranks, because the scales differ.
